on each of my hybrid classes I ALWAYS carry two sets of armor.

yes, we thought of that but at the same time we couldn't find a 5th to fill the group. Sure, we could have attempted it with only 4 people but nobody else in the group wanted to give it a shot except myself and my hunter friend. So that totally negates your "proof"

damage meters tell you your aggro, and anyone else using a compatible threat meters' aggro, in relation to your current target.
with no threat modifiers, 1 point of damage = 1 point of threat. I believe rogues have an innate 20% threat reduction, which means 1 point of damage = .8 points of threat.
buffs like salv drop it even further, not additevely, but multiplactive(sp). for a rogue with salv 1 point of damage would equal 1*(.8 x .7)= .56 point of threat.

tanks have high threat abilities, that do extra threat on top of the damage it does. it makes it easy for them to do more threat than you, since they will likely be doing much less damage.
